What is NDIS ?

NDIS Empowering Independence

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a life-changing initiative by the Australian Government that provides support for individuals under 65 with permanent and significant disabilities. It provides personalised funding to help people with disabilities live more independently, improve their daily life skills, and connect with their community. The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and regulated by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

The scheme is entirely publicly funded and not means-tested. Participants do not contribute financially to receive support. It operates independently from other services, such as the Disability
Support Pension or Medicare. NDIS funding is specifically for disability-related supports that help you achieve your goals across areas such as mobility, communication, daily activities, social participation, employment, and health.

How Does NDIS Work?

NDIS is built on a personalised model. If you’re eligible, you will receive a plan that outlines your specific goals and the funding allocated to help you achieve them. You can choose how your plan is managed:

Self-Managed

You manage your own funds and supports

Plan Managed

A registered Plan Manager helps manage your budget and payments

NDIA-Managed

The NDIA directly pays registered providers on your behalf
Plans are flexible and reviewed regularly to reflect any changes in your needs, circumstances, or goals. This ensures ongoing support aligned with your lifestyle.

Who is Eligible for the NDIS?

To access the NDIS, you must:
Be under 65 years old when you apply
Live in Australia and be a citizen, permanent resident, or a Protected Special Category Visa holder
Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
The scheme includes support for people with physical, intellectual, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities.

What Does the NDIS Fund?

The NDIS funds three categories of support:

Core Supports

  • Daily personal care
  • Transport to the community, work, or social activities
  • Assistance with household tasks
  • Consumables such as continence aids

Capacity Building

  • Support Coordination
  • Behaviour support
  • Life skills development
  • Employment-related support

Capital Supports

  • Assistive technology (wheelchairs, communication devices, etc.)
  • Home or vehicle modifications
Supports must be reasonable, necessary, and directly related to your disability.
